IVF Tunisia: In Vitro Fertilisation at a Controlled Cost
IVF remains a long and costly journey for many couples. In Tunisia, fertility centres offer personalised protocols and success rates comparable to European standards, for a much more affordable budget.
What Is IVF?
In vitro fertilisation involves stimulating the ovaries to obtain several eggs, retrieving them by puncture, fertilising them in the laboratory, then transferring one or more embryos into the uterus. In cases of male infertility, ICSI (direct injection of a sperm cell into the egg) is often added to the protocol.
Who Can Consider IVF?
This protocol is for couples facing unexplained infertility, blocked fallopian tubes, male infertility or repeated failures of artificial insemination — as well as those for whom waiting times or costs in their own country have become a real obstacle.
How Does the Treatment Work?
It all starts with an initial consultation and a complete assessment (hormone tests, semen analysis). This is followed by 10 to 12 days of ovarian stimulation with regular ultrasound monitoring, then egg retrieval under light anaesthesia. Fertilisation takes place in the laboratory over 3 to 5 days, before the embryo(s) are transferred. Allow 12 to 15 days on site to cover the whole protocol, from stimulation to transfer.
What Budget Should You Plan?
A complete IVF cycle starts at around €2500 in Tunisia, compared with €4000 to €6000 in France, a saving of around 45%. ICSI starts at €2900. These amounts include the assessment, stimulation medication, egg retrieval, laboratory work and transfer, with follow-up by the biologist. One point to know honestly: unlike in France, where IVF is partly reimbursed, a cycle carried out abroad generally is not — check this with your health insurance fund before you leave.
What Are the Chances of Success?
The success rate depends mainly on age and medical profile, as it does everywhere: it is generally around 35 to 45% per cycle before age 35, and decreases with age. Your medical coordinator sends you the actual statistics of the chosen clinic before any commitment, so you can decide with full knowledge of the facts.
After the Transfer
The pregnancy test takes place 12 to 14 days after the transfer. Remote follow-up with your usual gynaecologist remains possible, and your complete medical file is sent to you. A companion is strongly recommended during the stimulation period, which is often emotionally demanding.
